Parents, Teachers, Children: Listen to Your Buds

At their national convention last week, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) introduced a new website, Listentoyourbuds.org, aimed at preventing noise-induced hearing loss from mp3 players. The consumer awareness campaign by ASHA was initiated after a 2006 study found that "more than half of high school students in the U.S. report having at least one symptom of hearing loss."

Listentoyourbuds.org has educational games and information for children and young teens, but there are many resources specifically designed with parents and educators in mind. Parents can find information on the causes and effects of hearing loss in children, tips on preventing noise-induced hearing loss, and details on how to get help for a child with hearing loss. Teachers can find out What to Do When Students Have Hearing Loss as well as Three Things Educators Can Do to help inform students about noise-induced hearing loss.
